AVID at GHS Honored with “Highly Certified” Award

Greenwich High School has been recognized by AVID as a “AVID Highly Certified Site” for the 2014-2015 school year.

GHS submitted documentation to substantiate several benchmarks:

• 100% of students and staff involved with AVID at GHS volunteer to participate in the program.

• Each year 100% of AVID students’ schedules reflect enrollment in an increasingly more rigorous sequence of courses, appropriate to the student, which will enable them to fulfill the sequence of 4-year college or university entrance requirements.

• Full implementation – AVID exists in all grades and has expanded to two 9th grade sections.

• In the 2013-2014 school year, 100% of AVID seniors applied and were accepted to college.

• In the 2013-2014 school year, $1.5 million in scholarships and grants was awarded to the AVID senior class.

• In the 2013-2014 school year, 100% of AVID juniors and seniors participated in the SAT and/or ACT.

• 20 additional faculty members beyond those directly involved with the AVID elective have been trained in AVID methodologies as Greenwich High School moves the AVID program components school wide.

“Strong district and school leadership, especially the dedication of GHS AVID Site Coordinator Mara Adelsberg and all our AVID teachers, has led to a designation for which the entire GHS community is extremely proud,” said Headmaster Winters in a release.

The program at GHS provides students who might otherwise struggle the opportunity and skills needed to succeed, Winters explained.

The first AVID class at Greenwich High School (GHS) launched in 2009 with the help of a grant from the Greenwich Alliance for Education.

The Alliance has been an ongoing supporter in advancing the program across grades and into two middle schools. The GHS program has expanded from the initial ninth grade pilot class to a section at each grade level (9-12) and two in ninth grade. The program has also been implemented at Central and Western Middle Schools, with planned expansion to each grade level (6-8) over the next two years.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other post-secondary opportunities.

Established more than 30 years ago with one teacher in one classroom.

Today, AVID impacts more than 700,000 students in 45 states and 16 other countries/territories. AVID trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and a career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
