Sacred Heart Greenwich has a pre-application to be discussed by the Planning & Zoning Commission at their June 9 meeting at 4pm.
The applicant proposed to construct a 26,000 square foot academic building including a bridge connection area and associated site improvements, on a 109.197-acre campus at 1177 King Street in the RA-4 zone.

Sacred Heart Greenwich proposed STEM building, rendering Perkins Eastman, 677 Washington Blvd, Stamford
According to the application file narrative, the school wants to provide a modern academic facility capable of supporting the expanded pedagogical, technological, and programmatic demands of contemporary STEM education.
The project, as currently envisioned, would include the following components:
1. The demolition of the existing 2,434 SF “Duchesne Duplex” faculty housing unit and its associated six (6) parking spaces. Note: One current resident is expected to retire at the end of the academic year, and the remaining resident will be relocated to another on-campus housing unit;
2. The construction of a new 3-story, 25,900+-SF freestanding STEM Building, inclusive of a new glass-enclosed bridge connection between the proposed STEM Building and the adjacent main academic building creating a safe, climate-controlled connection between the 2nd level of the existing building and a small mezzanine level within the new building. The new building will be designed to complement the Georgian architecture of the existing academic buildings while incorporating contemporary architectural elements reflective of its academic purpose
3. Construction of two (2) parking spaces and related site access improvements directly in front of the new building, including widening the existing drive to a consistent 20-foot width to accommodate fire truck access, provide handicapped-accessible access to the building, and establish a designated loading drop-off area.
4. Installation of modest lighting and landscaping improvements consistent with the character of the existing campus; and
5. The implementation of utility and infrastructure improvements necessary to support the proposed development and overall campus programming, including:
a. The widening of the existing drive along the site’s northern property line, which connects the academic quad with SHG’s athletic fields and maintenance area, from approximately 10-14 feet in width to a consistent 20 feet, to accommodate temporary construction access for the STEM building project and support the school’s long-term use of this connection between the two areas;
b. Regarding an area north of the proposed STEM building to create a level area for construction access and staging during the active construction period, which would thereafter be potentially maintained as lawn and used on a limited, occasional basis for overflow parking by the school;
c. Stormwater management improvements that would use the project as an opportunity to enhance on-site wetland functions, including a potential water quality swale and rain gardens to treat runoff before it discharges to existing wetland system; and
d. Improvements to sanitary sewer collection piping necessary to serve the proposed building, upgrades to the site’s electric service, and an extension of water service for both domestic and fire protection purposes.
In addition to the above, the school will undertake modest renovations within the existing Gillespie Wing to convert the existing science classrooms into visual arts, music, or general classrooms and support spaces as determined by SHG to serve its academic needs.

A second pre-application on the June 9 P&Z agenda for discussion is for renovations and a three-story addition at 10 Mason Street in the former BNY Mellon building. The meeting starts at 4pm, via Zoom only.
