Sound Beach Day School’s Shared Curiosity Hones in on Spotted Lanternfly

Each year, our program follows the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS) by observing children’s emerging interests and using them as a foundation for meaningful, project-based learning. This year, a shared curiosity developed around the spotted lanternfly, an invasive species frequently found on our playground.

Children expressed excitement and curiosity as they noticed these insects outdoors, often discussing what they observed and asking questions. Through guided exploration, they learned that spotted lanternflies can harm native plants and trees by feeding on sap and leaving behind a sticky residue that can lead to the growth of sooty mold. This discovery supported early science learning, encouraging children to build awareness of ecosystems, cause and effect, and environmental responsibility.

As part of this investigation, children collected specimens and used magnifying tools to closely examine the insects’ physical characteristics. They observed details such as wing patterns, body structure, and color, making connections to familiar features like the stripes of a bumblebee. These experiences supported the CT ELDS domains of cognition, scientific inquiry, and language development as children described, compared, and shared their findings.

The study also extended into the arts. Children explored the unique structure of the lantern fly’s wings, learning that they have multiple layers. Using observation as inspiration, they created detailed drawings with marker and watercolor, focusing on shape, color, and design. This process fostered creativity while strengthening fine motor skills and visual expression.

Through this integrated, hands-on project, children engaged in collaborative learning, critical thinking, and creative exploration—hallmarks of a high-quality early childhood program grounded in the CT framework.

Sound Beach Day School offers a Reggio Emilia Inspired, project-based learning environment where children’s natural curiosity leads the way. Our educators thoughtfully guide students as they explore, investigate and build meaningful connections with their peers. They place strong emphasis on Child-Led exploration, Outdoor play, connection with nature, and Positive social interaction and development.
