Greenwich Woman Charged with Risk Of Injury after 5-Year-Old Found in Roadway

A Greenwich woman has been charged with Risk of Injury following an investigation by Greenwich into an incident that occurred on May 17, 2025 in Chickahominy.

At approximately 11:50 am, officers responded to a report of an unsupervised child walking on a public roadway.

The child, later to be confirmed to be a five-year-old, left the roadway and entered the residence through an open second-floor door.

Officers located two young children alone inside the apartment, without adult supervision.

Further investigation revealed that the children’s caregiver had left the residence unattended while she went to another part of the property. Evidence gathered during a follow-up visit — including body-worn camera footage and a walk-through of the premises — indicated that the caregiver was not in the laundry area, as initially claimed, but had become distracted during a conversation elsewhere on the property. It was determined the children were unsupervised for at least 12 minutes, during which time one child exited the apartment and entered a public street.

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) was notified and is actively involved.

As a result of the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued on June 5, 2025, for Erika Crespo, 39, charging her with Risk of Injury to a Minor.

On June 7, 2025, Crespo voluntarily turned herself in at Greenwich Police Headquarters. She was processed and released on a Written Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear at Stamford Superior Court on June 23, 2025.

“The Greenwich Police Department takes the safety and well-being of children in the community seriously and encourages all caregivers to remain vigilant and attentive at all times,” police said in a statement, adding that, “No further information will be released at this time to protect the identities of the children involved.”
