Two town trees have been posted for removal at Greenwich High School, and a pubic hearing has been scheduled via Zoom on Wednesday April 13, 2022 a 1:00pm.
The two trees are behind the school. One is between the parking lot and field 3. The other is further north, between the corner of the parking lot and and fields 5 and 6.
Greenwich Tree Warden Dr. Greg Kramer said in an email on Thursday that the two trees are Honey Locust trees (Gleditsia triacanthus). He added that the two trees were requested for removal as the contaminated soil is to be removed where the trees reside.
Both trees have a DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) of 16 inches.
As recently as January, during a public hearing about the GHS vestibule, Greenwich Tree Conservancy director JoAnn Messina said 800 trees on the GHS campus had been removed in the past decade.
Also, when the high school received a variance for MISA, neighbors were promised that 120 trees and extensive landscaping as a condition, but that has not happened.
A year ago, 34 trees were posted for removal on the GHS campus as part of the Cardinal Stadium project, and both neighbors and the Greenwich Tree Conservancy said the issue of removing trees should have come up early in the process, not at the end.
The April 13 public hearing will be held via Zoom.
