Temple Sholom Selma Maisel Nursery School Hosts Mini Summer Olympics

Greenwich’s Temple Sholom Selma Maisel Nursery School (300 East Putnam Avenue) hosted its own version of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games on August 2 with a school-wide celebration filled with ruach (spirit), joy and comradery.

All classrooms selected a country to represent and had the opportunity to make flags for the SMNS Opening Ceremonies. A child from each class was given the honor of carrying a mock Olympic Torch and led their team into the Social Hall “arena” amid applause and music.

The Mini Olympic Games included age-appropriate activities such as obstacle courses, hanging from the gymnastics bars, ring toss, basketball, and “swimming” relay races on scooters. Following the friendly-competition, each child was awarded a medal from the SMNS Olympic Committee of teachers and posed for a picture in front of the colorful Olympic ring backdrop.

“We were so excited to share the thrill of the Summer Olympic Games with our part-day summer session and full-day classes,” said David Cohen, Director of Schools. “It was an exhilarating experience that encouraged each child to showcase their individual strengths and help build confidence, while also working together with their classmates in a team setting.”
