Sacred Heart Greenwich Announces New Heads of Upper and Middle Schools

Sacred Heart Greenwich announced that it has appointed Mary Frederick as Head of Middle School effective July 1, 2023. This change in leadership comes after Mr. John Zwack, current Head of the Middle School, will depart Sacred Heart at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 academic year to pursue new opportunities.

Frederick, the parent of Alana Frederick ‘21, joins Sacred Heart Greenwich from St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, where she has worked for the past seven years in various roles including Upper School and Middle School Math Department Chair, and most recently Assistant Head of Upper School.

In her new role, Frederick will serve as the educational leader of the Middle School, ensuring students’ spiritual, educational, social, physical, and psychological needs are met through an innovative and robust curriculum that will prepare them for Upper School as well as their future careers. In addition, she will oversee the professional development of middle school faculty and staff and manage the co-curricular offerings and student experience.

As the Assistant Head of Upper School at St. Luke’s, Frederick has experience in supporting and growing innovative academic and co-curricular programs with a student-centered approach, building school culture, developing new policies and procedures for student success, and implementing innovative teaching practices. As a forward-thinking administrator and leader, she oversaw a comprehensive math curriculum review in grades 5-12, was responsible for both the Upper and Middle school Math departments, and worked collaboratively with Division Heads and department chairs to institute new programming. 

Ms Frederick also participated in the Upper School’s Advisory program, Student Council, new student orientation, and the faculty growth and renewal team in support of teachers’ professional growth while developing and leading programming and professional development. Prior to St. Luke’s, she worked in both middle and upper school math departments at St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Florida, and at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia. Prior to education, Mary spent 10 years in the hospitality industry in New York City and Boca Raton, Florida

I welcome the challenge of becoming a visible champion of student growth, innovative teaching practices, and the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart”

Frederick holds a Bachelor of Science from Florida State University and a Certificate in Advanced Educational Leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Also, the school announced that Meghan McMahon named Head of Upper School at Sacred Heart Greenwich

After a nationwide search, the school appointed Meghan McMahon as Head of Upper School effective July 1, 2023.

Marcie McDonald, who has served as the Interim Head of Upper School for the 2022-2023 academic year, will resume her role as Upper School Academic Dean.

Ms McMahon joins Sacred Heart Greenwich from Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts (UASPA), a school she helped establish in 2006, and where she has held various roles including Assistant Principal of Supervision, and most recently Principal.

In her new role, McMahon will serve as the educational leader of the Upper School, responsible for the educational, physical, social, psychological, and spiritual needs of the members of the Upper School community to ensure that all constituencies work together to create a dynamic and inclusive environment. In addition, she will oversee programs to support educators and oversee the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs. 

As a co-founder of UASPA 17 years ago, McMahon has been instrumental in building and leading the only non-selective performing arts high school in New York City.  During her time there, she led the development of the school’s Comprehensive Education Plan and established a clear vision and mission to support student success, aligning goals, programs, and policies. McMahon also oversaw teacher development and support, managed school budgets, worked closely with admissions to recruit and enroll students, and created a master program to best incorporate guidance departments. Prior to UASPA, she worked at Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in Newton, MA.

“As a graduate of a Sacred Heart Network School, I am honored to be joining Sacred Heart Greenwich as the new Head of Upper School,” McMahon said in a release. “This opportunity allows me to combine my love of education along with my deep appreciation of the values instilled in me through the Goals and Criteria and I look forward to educating the next generation of female leaders.”

McMahon holds a Bachelor of Arts from the College of the Holy Cross, a Master of Arts in Teaching and History from Tufts University, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Columbia University, Teachers College.
