March 9 Will be Regular School Day in Greenwich; School Bus Tracker in the Works for Families

With more snow anticipated for early next week, Greenwich Public School families are anticipating a possible additional snow day or delayed opening.

Last Monday Feb 23 was a snow day. On Wednesday morning, Feb 25, as snow fell again, there was no delayed opening resulting in a bit of chaos for families trying to get to school in the morning.

Greenwich Public Schools superintendent Dr. Toni Jones apologized for the challenging morning travel conditions, explaining that decisions about closures or delays are made at 4:30am based on information available at that time.

Now, the National Weather Service is forecasting a chance of snow before 1pm on Tuesday, followed by rain.

In her Friday, Feb 27 message to families, Dr. Jones said any decision will be made early in the morning in tandem with new school start times.

She said that because three instructional days were lost due to snow – and there is almost a month left of winter – the district calendar has been altered to make Monday, March 9th a regular school day.

Previously March 9 was marked on the calendar as a day for Teacher Professional Learning & Development and K-8 conferences.

To allow for professional development and K-8 conferences, Wednesday, March 18 will now be an early release day.

Jones said while the district built five snow days, adding additional days in June is not the best instructional time.

School Bus update: School Bus Tracker

Jones noted that as families are aware, the district is working with DATTCO as the new bus company this year.

“We have requested that all buses have the ability to be tracked by families using a satellite-based app on their phones, she said, adding, “It would be very helpful on mornings when weather or road congestion impacts bus times. While we do not have the exact roll out date, we want our families to know it is coming soon.”
