Board of Ed Recognizes 8th Grade Science Standout!

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 10.38.29 AM At the May Board of Education meeting, several students were recognized for their achievements, both athletic and academic. CMS principal Shelley Somers gave kudos to Bennett Hawley, an award winning 8th grade science enthusiast whose work involved the substitution of metals in a salt-water engine in order to increase energy-efficiency.

Bennett was the sole middle school Finalist in the 2015 CT Science and Engineering Fair. He was a 1st Honor Finalist, winning 5th place in the Physical Sciences Middle School category and an additional eight awards. He will be honored by the Connecticut Association of Schools later this month.

“Bennett, you are an asset to our school and I am proud of all the work you have done,” Somers said.

“Okay Mr. Bramante, you got that name written down?” Board of Education Chair Barbara O’Neill said with a nod to the GHS research science teacher.

Bennett is also a member of the Central Middle School Science Research Club, which was initiated and mentored by GHS students Margaret Cirino, Emma Goodman, Spencer Matonis, and Max Minichetti. The high school students mentor and guide the middle school students through the science research process.
