Last week Facebook was buzzing about the BMW X7 that was stolen from a driver who was at the self serve vacuum area at the Old Greenwich Car Wash at the Shell Station. The driver turned away momentarily to toss something in the trash and a man jumped in the car and drove off with it.
“A woman was vacuuming on the passenger side of the car when another car pulled up on the driver side,” Captain Patrick Smyth confirmed last week. “A male got out, jumped in the driver’s seat of victim’s car and drove off.”
On Saturday, the Westchester County Police Department /Real Time Crime announced on Facebook that three suspects had been arrested and face multiple charges. The names of the suspects were not released. Nor were there mugshots.
“Recently, Greenwich PD reached out to the Real Time Crime center for assistance in a high-priority case involving a crew targeting high-end vehicles. The suspects had followed a woman in Greenwich and, as she pumped gas, forcibly stole her BMW X7 right at the pump,” they said in the post, adding, “Greenwich PD quickly developed intelligence that the suspects planned to meet in the Home Depot parking lot in Mount Pleasant to sell the stolen vehicle.”
WCPD said they were part of a multi-agency task force that was swiftly deployed, including personnel from Mount Pleasant Police Dept, Yorktown Police Dept, Rye Police Dept, Greenwich Police Dept, Westchester’s Real Time Crime Unit (RTC), and the FBI.
WCPD said when the suspects showed up at Home Depot, law enforcement moved in. The trio tried to flee by car, but that attempt was thwarted. Two suspects were immediately taken into custody, but one managed to run off into woods near a Con Ed facility.
With the additional assistance of Greenburgh PD, Elmsford PD and Briarcliff Manor PD, a perimeter was secured. A WCPD tracking Bloodhound soon led officers to the final suspect, who was found hiding under a seat inside a Con Ed vehicle.
The suspects face numerous charges in Mount Pleasant Court, including Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 2nd Degree (value greater than $50,000) and Conspiracy 4th Degree.
WCPD said the trio is believed to be responsible for multiple recent vehicle thefts across the region. An investigation continues.
The BMW was recovered and returned to its rightful owner.
“This outcome yet again showcases the power of intelligence-driven policing, interagency collaboration, and relentless teamwork. Excellent work by all!” they added.
