Police and Fire Dept responded to the scene of a small fire on South Water Street in Byram on Friday night, Nov 8, around 8:00pm.
There were numerous posts in neighborhood Facebook groups Friday night about fireworks in the vicinity of a lumberyard and boatyard.
According to Lt Patrick Smyth of Greenwich Police, upon police arrival, the Greenwich Fire Dept had already extinguished the small fire.
“A witness related that he observed a vehicle pull up to the area and two subjects get out and that they then lit off some fireworks,” Smyth said. “The witness related that when the fire started the 2 subjects ran back to the vehicle and left the area.”
Thankfully it rained in Greenwich Sunday, but the Governor on Saturday declared a Stage 2 drought advisory for all eight counties in Connecticut due to far below normal precipitation levels and ongoing fire danger levels statewide.
“The lack of rain over the past two months has caused exceptionally dry conditions across Connecticut, resulting in numerous wildfires and reduced groundwater levels and streamflows,” Governor Lamont said.
Last month, Governor Lamont declared a state of emergency to assist the state in its response to the ongoing lack of precipitation and critical fire weather conditions. That emergency declaration remains in effect.
Shortly after the declaration was issued, the Connecticut DEEP enacted a burn ban that prohibits the use of outdoor grills, firepits, campfires, and the kindling and use of flame outdoors at all state parks, forests, and wildlife management areas statewide. That burn ban also remains in effect.
