Greenwich Police Warn Residents of “Package Scam”

Greenwich Police warn residents that they’ve seen an increase in packages being delivered to homes throughout Greenwich that are in the homeowner’s name but are not ordered by homeowner.

Greenwich Police Lt Mark Zuccerella said this tactic is a common method used by identity thieves.

“They use a third party’s stolen credit card information or identity to create a credit card account,” he said. “Then they purchase items and have them sent to a random house via FedEx or UPS.”

Zuccerella said the suspect then goes and gets the package after it is dropped off.

Any residents who receive a package they did not order should call Greenwich Police at (203) 622-8004 and they will come and dispose of it and try to track down the account holder to advise them their ID has been stolen.

Also, Zuccerella added that there is no time like the present to check your personal identifying information with the three credit bureaus to make sure you do not have any unknown credit accounts opened in your name or Social Security Number.
