Greenwich Police Track Down Hit & Run Driver from Two Crashes in One Day

On Monday evening around 7:00pm Greenwich Police responded to a report of a hit and run crash in the area of Lincoln Avenue and Milbank Ave in downtown.

On scene investigation led officers to the offending vehicle which was driving in a nearby residential area.

Police say the suspect, Richard Bertolf, 45, of Greenwich was operating the vehicle and presented with glassy, bloodshot eyes, and when he spoke his breath had the odor similar to that of an alcoholic beverage.

The suspect was asked to submit to a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests which he was unable to perform to standard.

Police said they further determined that Mr. Bertolf had been involved in two separate crashes and did not stay on scene for either of them.

He was transported to Greenwich Police headquarters, where he was processed.

Mr. Bertolf was charged with Evading Responsibility with Injury Property Damage; Illegal Operation While Under the Influence and Failure to Drive Upon Right (2 counts).

He was able to post the required 10% of his $500 bond and has a date in Stamford Superior Court on July 24, 2023.
