On Sunday Greenwich Police caught up with a suspect wanted for Conspiring to Commit Burglary back in summer 2022.
Police said that on Sunday, July 28, their investigators traveled to Maryland’s Montgomery County Detention Center to extradite and take custody of Axil Joshua Castillo-Almeida, now 24, with a NYC address.
Mr. Castillo-Almeida was wanted for Conspiracy to Commit Burglary 3, a Class D felony, for an incident back on Aug 27, 2022 on Lockwood Road in Riverside.
He was processed and bond was set at $500,000. He was assigned a date in Stamford Superior Court the following day, July 29.
According to the judicial branch website, his status is “awaiting plea,” and he is due again in court on Oct 23, 2024. Further it noted Castillo-Almeida was not released from custody.
Here in Greenwich, in 2022, the town experienced many burglaries committed by separate criminal “tourist burglars” groups. GPD arrested a man by warrant from Santiago, Chile for an incident that took place on Indian Head Road in Riverside on May 18, 2022 and had warrants for several other suspects.
At the time, GPD warned residents that the suspects, “tourist burglars,” enter the United States, commit several burglaries in an area, and return to their country of origin. They added that that the suspects hit high-end properties in the evening hours after sunset when residents are not at home, enter through a second floor window or door, but flee without stealing property if the home is armed with an alarm.

According to a release in 2023 from New Castle County Police in Delaware titled, “Increase in Burglaries Being Committed by South American Crime Rings,” three members of an interstate burglary crew were charged for their roles in multiple burglaries that occurred in that county in 2022. One of the suspects was Mr. Castillo-Almeida.
At the time they wrote that they, along with several bordering state agencies and their federal law enforcement partners had identified a nationwide trend of residential burglaries perpetrated by groups known as “South American Theft Groups” or “Crime Tourists.”
“South American Theft Groups are highly organized criminal enterprises that travel from state to state committing burglaries and thefts. SATGs will use advanced techniques to conceal their criminal activity. These groups are often unrelated to each other but use similar methods of targeting expensive homes and homes owned by Asian Americans,” the New Castle County Police wrote.
Mr. Axil Joshua Castillo-Almeida and two others – Cesar Almeida-Casas and Jeremmy Castillo-Almeida – were also charged with two felony counts of burglary in the second degree, one felony count of theft of over $100,000 and victim is 62 years or older, three felony counts of theft over $1,500, one felony count of conspiracy in the second degree, and two misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief.
