Driver Hits Pedestrian Walking a Bike, Pedestrian Punches Driver in the Head

Benedito Vagner Barbosa, 47, of 72 Prospect Street in Greenwich was arrested after Police received a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Arch Street on Friday about 5:30pm.

According to Lt. Kraig Gray, a firefighter was responding to an unrelated call when he observed a subject on the ground by Greenwich Plaza.

“Believing he needed help he went to his aid and observed the suspect strike the victim with an open hand,” Gray said, adding that the firefighter then separated the two parties.

“Once there was no further contact between the the two, the firefighter then assisted the person who had minor injuries,” Gray said.

Gray explained that according to the report, the pedestrian, Mr. Barbosa, had been walking his bicycle along the sidewalk when the driver of a 2008 Ford Edge hit the him as he turned into the driveway of Greenwich Plaza.

The driver collided with the bicycle and leg of the pedestrian, throwing him to the ground, Gray said, adding that there were no witnesses to the collision.

Lt. Gray said the driver, a 64-year-old man, stopped immediately after striking the pedestrian. The driver got out of his car, only to be popped in the face by the pedestrian before the firefighter separated the two.

“The driver had a one inch laceration above the left eye,” Lt. Gray said.

Mr. Barbosa was arrested and charged with Breach of Peace 2nd degree and Assault on a Elderly Person.

Barbosa’s bond was set at $10,000, which he was unable to post. He has a court date in Stamford Superior Court on Dec. 16, 2016.
