CSP: Excessive Speed Leads to Arrest for Reckless Driving, DUI on I-95 in Greenwich

On March 6, 2024, at approximately 1:13am, a Trooper assigned to Troop G in Bridgeport was parked on the right shoulder of I-95 southbound near Exit 3 in Greenwich. The Trooper was seated inside their cruiser, concluding an unrelated motor vehicle stop, when they observed a Toyota Tacoma pass their cruiser at an excessive rate of speed. In doing so, the Toyota operator failed to slow down or move over for the Trooper’s stationary emergency vehicle.

After completing the prior traffic stop, the Trooper followed the Toyota and clocked the vehicle traveling at speeds in excess of 100 MPH in the posted 55 MPH zone and swerving across the travel lanes in an erratic manner before exiting the highway at Exit 2 in Greenwich.

Based upon these observations, the Trooper initiated a motor vehicle stop and positively identified the operator of the Toyota as Edwin Garcia-Castillo, 28, of Stamford. While speaking with Garcia-Castillo, the Trooper observed that Garcia-Castillo’s eyes appeared to be bloodshot and also detected the strong odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from within the vehicle.

When asked, Mr. Garcia-Castillo initially denied consuming alcoholic beverages but later admitted that he had consumed alcoholic beverages prior to driving. Garcia-Castillo was asked and agreed to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which were not performed to standard.

Based upon the information obtained during the on-scene investigation, Garcia-Castillo was taken into custody and transported to Troop G where he was processed and charged with the following violations:

C.G.S. 14-227a, Operating Under the Influence
C.G.S. 14-222, Reckless Driving
C.G.S. 14-283b(b(1, Failure to Slow or Move Over for an Emergency Vehicle

Garcia-Castillo was later released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Stamford Superior Court, on March 27, 2024.
