Bedford Fire Dept: Rescue & Relocation of Dogs at Northwind Kennels Structure Fire Made for Challenging Rescue

Bedford New York Fire Dept announced on Friday that at 5:42am their crews were dispatched to a structure fire at Northwind Kennels, located on Old Post Road, where due to tight driveway access, only one engine was able to stretch a supply line up the driveway to the fire.

“We were met with heavy fire conditions in the rear and roof of a kennel building,” they said in their post. “There were multiple dogs occupying the same space, which made for a challenging rescue and relocation effort while fire extinguishment was underway.”

Animal control officers from Bedford and Mount Kisco were brought to the scene to assist.

“We believe all animals were accounted for on scene. As this address is in our pressurized hydrant district, we were able to secure water from a hydrant roughly 400 feet from the scene,” Bedfore Fire Dept said in their post.

The fire was brought under control in roughly an hour, but second alarm was called for additional personnel resources – three engines and one ladder – from South Salem, Armonk, Chappaqua and North White Plains, NY to assist with extensive overhaul and clean up at the scene.

Bedford Fire Dept expressed gratitude to both Banksville and South Salem who assisted in fire coverage and repacking during the event, and Vista EMS who covered a medical call as well.

The fire is under investigation by the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team.

Bedford Fire Dept said the fire was likely caused by a dryer machine.
