Alumni Sprints Regatta Set for Sunday

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 7.39.33 AMAlumni Sprints made history in 2013 as the first USRowing-sanctioned regatta specifically devoted to alumni racing.

In 2014, organizers offer and expanded, two-day format with competitors arriving on Saturday, April 26 and racing on Sunday, April 27.

All racing occurs on Sunday, and begins early at 7:30 am. Organizers are hosting a celebratory reception to coincide with event check-in the day before, on Saturday, April 26. Trailers are required to arrive prior to race day. Competitors may also use Saturday for practice rows.

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 7.36.26 AMRacing takes places in Greenwich Cove and stages from Tod’s Point in Old Greenwich. Alumni rowers race the final 1000 meters (0.62 mile) of a six-lane 2000 meter (1.24 mile) racecourse, which extends across the Cove’s widest section.

Competitors can select from 35 events, segmented by age and boat type (single, double, quad, four, and eight), and race as often as they please.

Testimonials on the event website refers to alumni rowing “family” and describe the Alumni Sprints as “a great excuse for us all to get together.”

Moving to its second year, Alumni Sprints joins the Head of the Charles in Boston as a major annual alumni event.

Spectators should expect fantastic races throughout the entire day and great locations throughout Tod’s Point to view them.

In 2013, Alumni Sprints welcomed alumni of Boston University, Brown, Cambridge, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Northeastern, Oxford, Princeton, the United States Military Academy, Wisconsin, Williams, Yale, and even New Zealand’s University of Otago. An even larger contingent is anticipated for 2014.

According to the Alumni Sprints website, alumni racing simply means that competitors race for an alumni affiliation, which can be associated with a high school or a college or university. Alumni Sprints welcomes all rowers, whether long-experienced or new to the sport. They do not require participants to have actually rowed for their alma maters.
