Stephen Miller Turner, 83

Stephen Miller Turner, 83, of Greenwich, Connecticut passed away with his family at his side after a brief and unexpected illness on January 20, 2023, in Greenwich. A memorial service honoring Steve will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 469 North Street, Greenwich CT 06830, on January 31, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. There will also be a service and burial in March 2023, in his childhood hometown of Clarinda, Iowa.

Steve was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Clinton and Margaret Turner on March 13, 1939. After graduating from Clarinda High School in 1957, he received his Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from William Jewell College in 1961. During his college years 1959-61, he served as a smokejumper in the U.S. Forest Service at Missoula, Montana. He earned a JD from University of Iowa Law School in 1964, and a Masters of Comparative Law from the University of Chicago in 1966. While studying law for a year in Paris, he met Claudine Mengin, a student at National School of Oriental Languages. The couple married on August 10, 1968, in Clarinda, Iowa.

After serving as an assistant United States attorney and then United States Attorney in the Northern District of Iowa, Steve joined Squire, Sanders & Dempsey as an associate in Cleveland in 1968. From November of 1969 to August of 1970, he took a leave of absence from the firm to serve as a senior staff member of the President’s Council on Executive Reorganization in Washington, D.C.

Steve was named a partner at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey in 1974. As managing partner, he opened and directed the firm’s office in Brussels, Belgium, from 1975 to 1982. He resumed his practice in the firm’s New York office in 1982, where he continued to specialize in cross-border matters. In 1989, he joined Texaco as Senior Vice President and General Counsel, assuming responsibility for its worldwide legal affairs. He was a trustee of the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law, Columbia School of Law and was a member of the Board of Trustees of William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri. After retirement in 1999, he spent many days pursuing his passion hunting birds and, occasionally, large game with his many friends, his sons and grandsons. His final duck hunt with friends and family was in December 2022. An amazing storyteller and proud grandfather, one of the highlights of each year was the Turner Family annual ski vacation. Steve was also a member of the Pawling Mountain Club, Pawling, New York, the Bayou Club, Abbeville, Louisiana, and the Metropolitan Club, New York.

Steve is survived by his wife of 54 years, Claudine Turner, his two sons Marshall (Kay) and Scott (Mickie), three granddaughters Alex, Ali, and Lottie, and two grandsons Henry and Charlie.

In lieu of flowers, Steve asked that friends and family consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
