Diana Klemin, who was 100 years old, died peacefully of natural causes at home on July 24, 2023. Miss Klemin was born on March 24, 1923 in New York City. Daughter of the late Alexander and Ethel Lucy (Morton) Klemin. Miss Klemin is survived by her cousins Denise Klemin Craig and Alexander Klemin and her long time loving and compassionate caregivers, Alexa and Stefan Popielczyk.

Diana graduated from Vassar College in 1944 with a bachelor’s degree. Between 1946 and 1952, she studied at the Art Students League, the New School for Social Research, and the Museum of Modern Art. After working briefly at G. P. Putnam’s Sons, Miss Klemin began her career with Doubleday & Company, Inc. in 1945. She worked as a book designer until 1953, when the company promoted her to the position of Art Director. She held this job until 1987. Diana Klemin has been listed as a noteworthy Art Director by Marquis Who’s Who.
As an Art Director, Diana visited museums and exhibits, and sorted through thousands of unsolicited submissions from graphic artists, looking for illustrations and book jacket art. During the 1960s, she oversaw the illustration of a forty-eight-volume children’s classics series. She also directed the art for the “Best-in-Children’s Books” book club, for which she obtained illustrations from numerous well-known artists, including Andy Warhol.
We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to all of the caregivers from Comfort Keepers and the nurses from Greenwich Nursing and Health Care Registry.
Burial will be private. A service in celebration of Diana’s life will be held at Christ Church in Greenwich, Connecticut on August 17, 2023 at 11:00am.
