Greenwich House Delegation Welcomes Funding for Safe Pedestrian Crossing at Byram and Pemberwick Roads

On Tuesday State Representatives Rachel Khanna, Steve Meskers, and Hector Arzeno announced the receipt of funds for safety improvements to the Route 1 pedestrian crossing at the intersections of Byram and Pemberwick Roads.

Due to the location, which includes CT Transit bus stops on both sides of Route 1 and its proximity to Western Middle School and Eugene Morlot Park, which includes Strazza field and Hamill ice rink, the area attracts a good deal of pedestrian traffic.

The funds totaling $450,000 were requested by the Greenwich House delegation and granted to the CT Department of Transportation and the Town of Greenwich.

“Pedestrian and traffic safety has been a priority of ours and I am thrilled that we will be able to better serve pedestrians in our community and will improve safety on our roadways, bringing us closer to achieving our Vision Zero goals,” said Rep. Khanna in a release from the House delegation.

“We continue to focus on public works, on our children, and our vulnerable residents. Our work to protect and improve the quality of life for all of Greenwich will continue,” said Rep Meskers. “Special thanks to Rachel who championed this work.”

“I am pleased to join and support Rachel in this effort to address increasing pedestrian and transit safety concerns in this busy area and look forward to the positive impact of this important project,” Rep. Arzeno said. “Rachel put in a lot of work for this proposal, and I appreciate those efforts.”

The State Bond Commission approved the funding on Tuesday, October 22 at a special meeting held at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
