Greenwich Free Press’ traditional feature series Cardinal Critics is back in full swing, this year led by Greenwich High School seniors Kathryn O’Donnell and Stella Santini. Their first stop was the town’s infamous Burgers, Shakes & Fries.
Located in Byram at 302 Delavan Ave, the first step into BSF is met by the crew’s warm smiles as they eagerly take your order. The menu has a certain simple charm, sticking to mainly burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, sides, and treats. This speaks to their logo, “So Simple. So good. So go.”
Upon our arrival, owner Kory Wollins was friendly and welcoming. When asked about the history of his menu, he explained that the menu had evolved slightly to meet the customer demand and survey their wants and needs.
One of BSF’s staples is their classic burger served on griddled white bread. It not only soaks up the flavor but creates the perfect ratio between burger and bread.
Kathryn and Stella both ordered classic single burgers, (topped with cheese, lettuce, and pickles) paired with the signature french fries. The meal was washed down with creamy black and white milkshakes served in COVID-safe plastic cups with individually wrapped straws.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Wollins explained that sales took a dip, but they were determined to meet customers’ needs and do all they can during this time. As an essential business, Wollins explained that they focused on take-out. This not only meant different food preparations but new ways to deliver the product. Wollins said they became much more efficient and mindful of their packaging, and through streamlining were able to stay agile through the pandemic.
Greenwich will be happy to know that in the midst of the vaccination roll out and easing of mask mandates, BSF is beginning to return to the bustling spot it’s known as.
What’s next for BSF? Wollins explained that in the future they hoped to open even more locations in addition to the ones in Byram and Darien. However, right now, they continue to focus on keeping up with customer demand, especially after the pandemic.
Burgers Shakes & Fries has grown largely through word of mouth over the years.
“We’ve always been big fans of you telling your friends. We win more customers with smiles,” Wollins said.
The old-school charm of Burgers, Shakes, and Fries definitely put smiles on our faces!
