Sandy Hook Survivor: Simmons is Committed to Stronger Gun Safety Laws

Submitted by Nicole Melchionno

As a survivor of the Sandy Hook School shooting and a student of Public Policy, I write to express my wholehearted support for Nick Simmons in his campaign for Connecticut’s 36th State Senate district.

Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America. This stark reality demands immediate action and compassionate leadership. Simmons, a former middle school teacher, intimately understands how gun violence impacts our schools and communities. His commitment to working across party lines to implement stronger gun safety laws offers hope for a safer future.

I often hear critics say that Connecticut already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. However, this should not prevent us from seeking ways to strengthen these laws or make them better. When we know better, we should do better—and vote better. It’s horrifying that some, like the current State Senator, Ryan Fazio, voted against Governor Ned Lamont’s comprehensive gun safety law. This law aims to make our schools and communities safer by banning open carry and limiting handgun sales, among other crucial measures. We cannot afford to waste time when it comes to enacting bold, lifesaving policies.

I can tell you that although it can be hard for young people to speak out about issues such as gun violence since it can be traumatizing, we are watching. We are watching our leaders and standing alongside them with hope that there is a brighter, safer future ahead of us.

That’s why I can confidently say that Simmons represents the kind of leadership we desperately need—someone committed to addressing this public health crisis head-on, uniting our communities, and tirelessly working towards sensible gun safety reforms. His dedication to protecting our children and standing up for the rights of all people makes him the ideal candidate for this critical position.

I urge my fellow citizens to consider the importance of this election. By supporting Nick Simmons, we choose a path of equality, safety, and progress for Connecticut.

Sincerely,
Nicole Melchionno
