Anthony Moor at the LWV Greenwich debate for Selectman candidates
I love exploring the centuries of history present in the landscape of Greenwich, from village centers, to stone walls, property lines, rambling roads and even the names we’ve affixed on them. On foot, by bike, or by car, they take us through time, telling tales that are hidden in plain sight.
Much of our story is stunning. But not all. Some schools are in need of serious investment. We don’t plan ahead, and we let things settle, sag and fall apart. Our traffic patterns are a mess, our sidewalks a daunting patchwork. And we need to bridge an acrimonious divide in our politics.
These stories point to a bigger problem. We need real leaders in Town Hall. Our First Selectman is suing the school board instead of supporting it. His allies on the finance board, the Board of Estimate and Taxation, pushed through partisan budget cuts. But when asked why he’s running again, he answers, “I’ve always loved the job.”
Loving the job isn’t enough. Greenwich needs leaders who love the work.
My career has been about that work. I’ve spent decades working to understand communities and make them better. First, as a local news reporter in towns across the country, I was out every day listening to residents, digging into issues, and holding leaders accountable. That taught me what makes communities thrive, and how quickly they can stall without strong, strategic leadership.
In my second career in software product development, I turned those listening skills into action, leading teams, fostering collaboration, and blending long-term strategy with agile problem-solving under fast-changing conditions. I know how to set a clear plan, adapt when needed, operate efficiently, and manage risk.
That’s the approach we need to run this town. And here’s what you can expect us to deliver:
-
Low, predictable taxes. Together with our BET, we’ll engage in smart financial planning that saves you money without sacrificing what makes Greenwich so attractive. This includes supporting our schools, and developing a credible, prudent, five-year capital plan and capital planning process that reflects our shared values.
-
Proactive maintenance. Hand in glove with low taxes comes the need to fix our town’s assets before they break. We’ll save so much money if we don’t wait until an emergency to act and plan prudently for what we’ll need for the future.
-
Strong schools. We’ll give educators the tools they need to keep delivering excellence.
-
Safe, smooth traffic flow. I will make transportation improvements part of our mission again, 16 years after the town eliminated our superintendent of traffic engineering. As Chair of the RTM (town legislature) Transportation Committee I’ve pushed our town to become more proactive about addressing this pressing problem.
-
Modern, responsive services. We’ll become more digital, efficient, and built for today at Town Hall.
The First Selectman can’t do this alone of course. Our unified slate of candidates on Row A shares this vision. But I can advance this agenda through the soft power of the position. Said simply: leadership. I will encourage transparency and collaboration across the political establishment, and take to the bully pulpit in public to build support from residents that gets us all working together.
Greenwich’s history is long and largely prosperous. We can ensure our future yields the same, as long as we heed the lessons of the past and choose leaders who can plan for what’s ahead.
