LETTER: “Play it Safe,” Ban Artificial Turf in Favor of more Environmentally Friendly Options

Submitted by Matthew Gladstein, Greenwich 9th grader and member of Boy Scout Troop 35

Having attended the webinar on July 25 titled, “Play It Safe: Grass vs. Artificial Turf Playing Fields” sponsored by Interreligious Eco-Justice Network for a panel discussion of artificial turf versus grass fields, I am convinced that grass fields should be prioritized for several compelling reasons.

Grass fields offer numerous benefits, including positive impacts on the climate and overall environment. Unlike artificial turf, which contains toxins and plastics that can harm wildlife, especially birds, grass fields support a healthier ecosystem.

Additionally, the cost of installing artificial turf is significantly higher—approximately $1.4 million—compared to grass fields, which cost around $360,000.

Furthermore, artificial turf tends to be more adversely affected by rain compared to grass fields.

In conclusion, I believe that artificial turf should be banned in favor of more environmentally friendly options.

Sincerely,
Matthew Gladstein
