LETTER: Meskers helped resolve my unemployment benefits problem

Open letter to State Rep Steve Meskers Submitted by Jeffrey Pellet, Greenwich

July 16, 2020

Dear Steve,

I would like to thank you for helping to resolving my unemployment benefits problem.  This past April I was laid off from a Greenwich CT based hedge fund.  I filed for my unemployment benefits and received the first several payments.  However, in May apparently, I failed to renew (or renewed incorrectly) and this resulted in the termination of my benefits.  I tried for over 5 weeks to get my benefits restored (i.e., refiling online, filing online requests for assistance, etc), but received no assistance or communication from the Department of Labor (DOL).  The Covid-19 crisis also meant there was no one to call at the DOL.  I was at a loss as to what to do next.  Very frustrating.

A friend suggested that I contact “my State Representative.”  Frankly, I was skeptical that this would be of any help, but it was worth a try.  It took a few minutes online to find your name, as my District Representative, and I emailed and left you a phone message.  To my surprise and delight, you contacted me that same day!  You empathized with my frustration and made it clear that you would do your best to help.  And, that you did.

It took about a day before you confirmed that my benefits were being restored and my back payments would be made.  You kept in contact each day until I confirmed I had received the payments.

Without your support I’m certain I would still be struggling to correct the situation.  I cannot overstate how impressed I am with your responsiveness and professionalism.  Connecticut is well served by you and I can only hope those in other Districts have the benefit of Representatives of your quality.
