LETTER: Greenwich needs Gevanter to stand up for the next generation of women.

Charlotte Richard is an 11th Grader at Greenwich Academy, a lifelong Greenwich resident, and a volunteer for Alexis Gevanter’s campaign.

There is one candidate in the race for the 36th district State Senate seat standing up for women: Alexis Gevanter.

As a business attorney, she worked to secure paid family leave, pay equity, and protect women from sexual harassment.

As an advocate, Alexis worked to secure Moms Demand Action’s support for Jennifer’s Law, a bill championed by CT Senator Alex Kasser. At a time when domestic violence has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, now is not the time to lose progress we gained in Connecticut. Our community needs a representative that will continue to advocate for women.

We should not accept anything less than a full commitment to women’s rights from our elected officials, both in Washington and Hartford. Our district has been lucky to have amazing Democratic representation in Washington. Congressman Jim Himes, a Greenwich resident, spoke up against the Abortion Full Disclosure Act, and was a co-sponsor of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019.

Alexis Gevanter has wasted no time making her values clear. I have chosen to volunteer on her campaign because I know that Alexis will strive to not only continue, but advance rights and protections for women in our community.

As a young woman, seeing other women in positions of power gives me hope for the future. I’m not old enough to vote, but I hope you will support Alexis on or before Tuesday, August 17th.

Alexis Gevanter is exactly who we need to fill the seat.
