KEMP: Do the Voting Moms Know People are Extremists if They’ve Never Spoken to Them?

Submitted by Peter Kemp, Greenwich

I am writing in response to the “Voting Moms” letter of 10/26. (The Voting Moms Endorse Bipartisan Moderate Slate of Candidates for RTM).

It claims to be a non-partisan organization that has vetted its list of recommended RTM candidates, yet I am running and have never been contacted by them and know others running who have also not been contacted.  They seem to claim that their slate includes the “only” moderate candidates that represent their “values” thus saving the rest of us from the “extremists,” some of whom they have never met and know nothing about.  How do they know these people are extremists or even people they don’t agree with if they have never spoken with them?

Everyone has the right to endorse whomever they want, but they should have the honesty to admit that they are either biased in their recommendations or they should identity whom they support, whom they oppose and whom they know nothing about.  It is fine to endorse your friends, but don’t claim to oppose people you don’t know.

This feels like they are a political group trying to hide under the veil of bi-partisanship, but maybe they are just ingenuous – either way, in these politically fraught times, I think we need more honesty and transparency, not more uninformed political rancor.

NOTE: The deadline for letters to the editor for candidates in the Greenwich Nov 7 municipal election was Oct 30th at 12:00 noon.
