HESS: Support Arch St and Grigg St Intersection Improvements

Submitted by Debra Hess, Greenwich resident and former BET member

I am writing in strong support of the Arch Street and Grigg Street intersection improvements.

A recent media report called attention to the fact that CT is on track to record the most pedestrian fatalities in state history. The report spoke of the crisis that we face in all of the municipalities. That is why I am happy to say that in Greenwich, our town is being very proactive in addressing pedestrian safety. In the past three years, we have seen initiatives to add and enhance new sidewalks, crosswalks and intersections.

Here in town, we have seen two of our own residents fatally struck in the past few years as well as three residents hit by cars at the same intersections that are being proposed to be improved. These intersection improvements will decrease the distance that pedestrians need to cross the street, improve sightlines and slow motor vehicles down. In addition, I applaud the Town and the Department of Public Works for working hard to secure grants that will completely fund these public safety enhancements.

Let’s continue to make Greenwich a safe and vibrant place to walk, hike, bike and run.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
