HARPER: Greenwich Needs Environmental Champions, Janet Stone McGuigan is One

Submitted by Isabelle Harper, GHS 2022

My name is Isabelle Harper and I am a college student at Wesleyan University. For many young people like myself, the prospect of growing up in a world whose climate is rapidly changing is frightening. NASA scientists report that the last eight years were each the hottest years on record. I worry about what the next eight years will bring, and the ones after that.

As a young voter, I am looking for candidates who will be leaders in tackling climate change. For me, that person is Janet Stone McGuigan.

Janet is the chairperson of the Greenwich Sustainability Committee, which addresses issues like climate resiliency, waste reduction, and air, land and water quality. Janet has also been closely involved in the efforts of another town group working to reduce our energy consumption–the Energy Management Advisory Committee, as well as the Active Transportation Task Force, which is trying to reduce emissions by encouraging biking, walking and other non-motor transit.

Janet truly seems to enjoy working with students and encouraging them in their interests in sustainability.

I would like to return her support by voting for her on November 7.  Please join me.  A vote for Janet is a vote for our environment and our future.

Isabelle Harper, a 2022 Greenwich High School graduate, was co-president of the Greenwich Environmental Advocacy Group during her time at the school. Led a group who drafted and proposed a “Climate Emergency Resolution” for the town.

NOTE: Deadline to submit letters to the editor about candidates in Greenwich’s municipal elections is Oct 30, 2023 at 12:00noon.
