Greenwich Hospital hosts a free seminar on weight-loss surgery

Greenwich HospitalGreenwich Hospital’s free weight-loss surgery informational session is set for Monday, November 13, 2017 at 4:45 pm in the Hyde Conference Room, Greenwich Hospital, 5 Perryridge Rd in Greenwich.

If you’re 60 pounds or more overweight and concerned about developing obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and gastric reflux, you may be a candidate for weight-loss surgery.

Known as “bariatric surgery,” there are three standard options to consider: a gastric bypass (which bypasses a portion of the stomach and “re-routes” food to the intestines); adjustable gastric banding (which adjusts the size of the stomach to restrict food intake); and a sleeve gastrectomy (in which a portion of the stomach is surgically removed). Each procedure carries risks but also offers those who have struggled with morbid obesity the opportunity to make behavior and lifestyle changes while losing a significant amount of weight.

In this free educational seminar, bariatric surgeons will discuss the criteria needed to qualify for surgery, the pros and cons of each procedure, the long-term health benefits and the post-operative counseling and support available from the Greenwich Hospital bariatric team.
