Green Lights at the Witherell to Commemorate Mental Health Awareness Month

The Nathaniel Witherell will join other regional organizations in Fairfield County and the State of Connecticut in commemorating Mental Health Awareness Month, May 1-31, and participate in the “Light It Up Green” campaign by lighting parts of its campus, notably the Witherell’s entrance, flagpoles, and building entry with green lights throughout the month.

Light It Up Green is part of Mental Health America’s annual campaign, in which it asks that buildings and structures across the U.S. light up green, the color for mental health awareness, throughout the month of May.

Mental Health Month has been observed every May for the last 75 years as a way of calling attention to the fact that one in five people will experience a mental health condition in any given year, and 50% of people in their lifetime.

“We believe strongly that the conversation on mental health and breaking down the stigma sometimes associated with it, must be had because the journey to mental well-being should never have to be faced alone,” said  John Mastronardi, Executive Director of The Nathaniel Witherell. “Anxiety and other mental issues are not just relegated to the young, and mental health issues are not exclusive to a particular age. Older adults can experience anxiety because of a variety of issues, and often crave companionship and social connection that are needed for one’s stability. So, we join with others in ‘Lighting It Up Green’ to show our solidarity and support of the belief that mental health is important and should be addressed.”
