Girl Scout Partners with Perrot Library on Gold Award Project to Launch Seed Library

The Perrot Memorial Library recently launched the Nancy Altznauer Memorial Seed Library, in partnership with Girl Scout Anna Mulligan, the Garden Club of Old Greenwich, and Greenwich Land Trust.

The Seed Library was named after Ms Altznauer, a former Perrot Library board member, who was instrumental in planning and executing Perrot Library’s beautiful landscaping and gardens, which we enjoy today.

Senior Girl Scout Anna Mulligan recently partnered with Perrot Library on her Gold Award Project to launch the Nancy Altznauer Memorial Seed Library.

“The Seed Library represents the combined efforts of many individuals and organizations,” said Kathy McCormack, Perrot Library board president.

“Perrot Library partnered with Senior Girl Scout Anna Mulligan, of Troop 50126, on the Seed Library as part of her Gold Award Project,” she added. “Also, Lori Mulligan, Girl Scout Troop 50126 Co-Leader, and Girl Scout Gold Award Project Advisor, Wendy Yu and the Master Gardeners at Garden Club of Old Greenwich, and Greenwich Land Trust all helped make the Seed Library a reality.”

A seed library is a place where anyone can come and get seeds to plant in their garden.

On March 17th, several people visited Perrot Library to see and use the new Nancy Altznauer Memorial Seed Library.

“Our Seed Library is a great start for beginner gardeners as it provides easily accessible seeds that one can try growing,” said Judy Sgammato, assistant director of Perrot Library and head of Adult Services. “Seed libraries create a community of gardeners and foster biodiversity, which helps the environment.”

The Nancy Altznauer Memorial Seed Library includes a variety of vegetable and flower seeds from which to select.

Perrot’s Seed Library is located opposite the Adult Circulation Desk in the Waid Building. Library patrons can come and choose seeds based on their gardening ability. For now, there is a limit of one envelope of seeds per variety per home. All seed packets have a QR code to scan for easy planting directions.

In working towards becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout, Anna had to choose a Gold Award Project focused on an issue that’s important to her. Gold Award Projects must provide a sustainable solution with a measurable impact, making the Seed Library an excellent choice. The Seed Library project, in its entirety, will take over 80 hours.

Currently, Anna has logged over 60 hours for the spring launch, including the development and execution of the library as well as collaboration with Perrot Library, the Garden Club of Old Greenwich, and Greenwich Land Trust. Stay tuned for a fall launch of seeds for native pollinator meadow plants as Anna continues the Girl Scout Gold Award Project.
