The Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich invites you to its meeting, September 25, 2024, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 1 West Putnam Ave., Greenwich, CT. The program will also be shown on Zoom: https://bit.ly/30IBj21
David G. Hawkins will give a talk titled,“Current Issues in Protecting Our Climate.”
Humans have upset Earth’s energy balance which shapes our climate. The impacts of a disrupted climate are already here, sooner than expected. Much worse suffering is in store if we fail to speed our response.
The good news is that we possess the knowledge and technical means to sharply limit additional climate change. The more sobering news is that, despite growing awareness, actual changes in how we produce and use energy and how we produce and consume food lag behind what we need to do. What are the main tools in our climate protection toolbox and what are the prospects for speeding our response?
This is the message of David Hawkins, who has worked with Congress, the Executive Branch, and various members of the business community to design policies that will slow, stop and reduce the emissions of global warming pollution. He is recognized as an expert on advanced coal technologies and carbon dioxide capture and storage.
Hawkins assumed his current position as Director, Natural Resources Defense Council’s (NRDC) climate programs in 2011.
Mr. Hawkins is Director Emeritus on the boards of the Woods Hole Research Center, Resources for the Future and the Center for Clean Air Policy. He has previously served on the Board on Environmental and Energy Systems of the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Climate Change Science Program Product Development Advisory Committee. He participated in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Special Report on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage
and in the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report on climate change.
Mr. Hawkins holds a J.D., Columbia Law School, 1970 and a B.A. (English), Yale University, 1965. He was elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2022. He is married with three children and lives in Old Greenwich.
The RMA’s next speaker, on October 2, will be Bob Heussler, Connecticut Sports reporter, radio voice of WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, on “Great Sports Rivalries.”
