One young boy summed up what people were thinking on Monday as the first bus of school children arrived at the newly expanded and renovated Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich.
“This isn’t the Boys & Girls Club,” he said.

The change is amazing and transformational, and a bit jarring as one moves from familiar spaces like the field house to the new gymnasium. Or from the familiar doors to the game room with its double height ceiling, to a space now a dedicated teen center with classrooms, breakout rooms and an office for Ryan Acurso. Upstairs from the teen center is another floor with six spacious classrooms and an arts/STEM space. The small gymnasium where basketball was played is now an activity room.
As bus after bus arrived, Club CEO Cristina Vittoria said all 15 Greenwich Public Schools were sending kids to the Club.
“This is the first time we have Old Greenwich,” she said. “The district stepped up with the buses. We used to send six of our buses to the schools. Now we only send our buses to two schools.”
Megan Sweeney, the club’s Vice President of administration, said on Monday 475 children walked through the Club’s new doors.
A separate event is in the works with a ribbon-cutting for the Rebecca Breed Clubhouse.
