Putnam Hill Hill Daughters of the American Revolution Announce Student Essay Contest

The Putnam Hill Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) had a kick off tea party and luncheon in honor of this year’s DAR national contest.

Grades 5-8 “Enjoying a new Kind of Tea Party” (600-1000 words required)

In the 1770’s there was a movement of protest from the Colonists against the British due taxes and laws. Along the eastern coast a number of Patriots held “tea” parties. The Boston Tea Party was on Dec. 16, 1773, and several other Tea Parties followed in 1774 in SC and NC where ladies refused to buy or burn British Tea. Why would you choose to join them? Grades 9-12. For students in these grades, the topic this year is “Patriots of the American Revolution” (800 to 1200 words are required).

Select a figure from the era of the American Revolution (1773-1783). Discuss how he or she influenced the course of the Revolution. It can be well known to everyday people.

Due date is November 18.

Vice Regent Caryn Frick announced this year’s DAR American History Essay Contest essay topic for 5-8th graders  “Having a new kind of Tea Party” with Linda Distefano giving her a goody bag of Bigelow Tea.

The speaker, Linda Distefano, from Bigelow Tea presented “The History of Tea” to 23 members and guests with goody bags. The members also got to see the newly established colonial herb garden in the backyard of Putnam Cottage, ca 1720 property.

Recently, the Riverside Garden Club presented this newly established colonial garden to the chapter. The vice regent, Caryn Frick, also announced this year’s national contest topics for the older grades.
