The Putnam Hill DAR recently celebrated Marquis de Lafayette, the French Revolutionary hero, who was invited by President Monroe in 1824 to tour America.

The chapter had a meet and greet social fall kick off and learned about Lafayette’s connection to our community while enjoying French goodies.

This year Americans are celebrating the Bicentennial Tour in which he toured all 24 states. Including coming through Greenwich on August 20, 1824.

Lafayette was given a senior position in 1781 under the Virginia Militia and was a key figure at the Siege of Yorktown, the final battle of the American Revolution.

Lafayette was cited as George Washington’s “adopted son” as they formed a close alliance.

It is well known George Washington with his troops ate at Israel Putnam House aka Putnam Cottage documented in 1779.

Greenwich can presume Lafayette might have also stopped at the Inn.  Putnam Hill DAR is on a membership drive and genealogy help can be given to trace to a patriot or person who aided in the American Revolution,  if interested. Fun activities are planned throughout the year.

The Chapter also has a Children of American Revolution group for students age 1 to  22 years. This is the largest chapter in Connecticut. For more information or joining either please contact Katie Sumner [email protected] or PutnamHillDAR.org.
