A demonstration took place outside town hall Wednesday evening during rush hour.
Commuters on busy Field Point Road spotted Hotel Workers United Local 217 who gathered with protest signs and leaders with megaphones chanting, “Respect Our Guests Respect Our Work,” and “One job should be enough.”
On their union Facebook page, Local 217 posted photos of picketers outside Omni New Haven Hotel from earlier in the day and commented:
“On this May Day workers at the Omni are calling for the hotel industry to ‘Respect Our Work!’ We are fighting for a new contract and have the community with us all the way! We were joined by our allies in UNITE HERE Local 33, 34, and 35, New Haven Rising. When we fight we win!”
“May Day,” also known as International Workers Day, falls on May 1. It is a day intended to observe and celebrate worker rights.
The day also represents a chance for workers to air economic grievances and political demands.
Rallies and marches took place across the country and overseas.
In some locations, Pro-Palestine groups joined the May Day rallies in support of the people in Gaza.
In France workers warned they might strike during the Olympic Games if they are not adequately compensated for working during summer holidays.
