This week is National Farmers Market Week. It runs Aug 2-8, and residents in Connecticut are encouraged to support local farms and the many local workers employed by them by visiting some of the more than 120 farmers markets statewide and purchase locally grown products designated with the Connecticut Grown logo.

Connecticut has nearly 5,000 farms working more than 370,000 acres to bring fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, shellfish, maple, honey and plants to residents, and contributing $4 billion to the state’s economy annually.
While the OG Farmers Market, now at St. Catherine’s in Riverside, is not a certified market – a list of certified farmers market in Connecticut can be found here ) – there are several CT Grown vendors at the OG farmers market, and many local favorites include Jackie’s Empanadas and Wave Hill Breads.

Waste Free Greenwich also has a presence at the OG Farmers market. This is a perfect chance to purchase a food scrap kit that features a countertop pail and a larger bin for weekly storage, plus rolls of compostable bags.
Better yet, if you want some instruction on using the new app for access to one of the new smart bins (in Cos Cob Park and Binney Park) one of the nice volunteers will help you.
Last week, Hillary Harper of Waste Free Greenwich was a wealth of information. She was even willing to help residents download the app to use the new smart bins for food scrap recycling launched in July 2026 at Binney Park and Cos Cob Park.
Residents can download the free metroKEY app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Accounts are verified and activated within 48 business hours.
These app-accessed, secure smart bins are available 24/7, making participation in the program even easier and increasing the tonnages diverted. Registered residents utilize an app to unlock the enclosed, secure collection bins, which are designed to reduce contamination and enhance cleanliness.
Instructions for using the smart bins are also detailed on the WasteFree Greenwich website.
The OG Farmers Market in Riverside is located at 11 Riverside Ave. It is weekly on Wednesdays, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm through November 11, 2026.
