LWV Greenwich to Host Discussion about “The Nation That Never Was: Reconstructing America’s Story”

The LWV Greenwich is hosting a talk with UPenn Professor Kermit Roosevelt III and Yale Professor Akhil Reed Amar on Monday, March 18, 2024, from 7:00pm until 8:215pm at the Greenwich Library’s Berkley Theater.

The two will discuss and debate Professor Roosevelt’s new book, The Nation That Never Was.

Professor Roosevelt, the great-great-grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt and a constitutional law scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, challenges us to re-examine the traditional narrative about how American values have evolved from the nation’s founding to the
present day. In his book, he argues for what he believes to be a more accurate and useful way to understand this story, suggesting we look to the 19th century as opposed to the 18th century as the inspiration for the America we live in today.

Professor Amar teaches constitutional law at both Yale Law School and Yale College. Amar’s work has won awards from both the American Bar Association and the Federalist Society, and he has been cited by Supreme Court Justices across the spectrum in more than four dozen cases – tops among non-emeritus scholars. He is the author of more than a hundred law review articles and several books, most recently “The Words That Made Us” about America’s constitutional conversation from 1760-1840.
A book signing will follow for both Professor Roosevelt’s and Professor Amar’s books.

Questions can be submitted in advance upon registration and there will
be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions during the event.
