Greenwich native Alexa Cervantes was named program coordinator for the recently-expanded Greenwich Junior United Way (GJrUW) student-led volunteer organization. Cervantes will work with middle and high school students, grades 6 through 12, on programming to positively impact the community through action.
Cervantes graduated from Greenwich High School before attending the University of Connecticut where she studied music. Along with serving as program coordinator for GJrUW, she is a music teacher working with Greenwich, Stamford, and New Canaan students throughout various programs.
“Growing up in town, I was actively involved in many organizations. One program in particular, Greenwich Alliance’s Tuning In To Music, kept me engaged in the community and helped me find my passion for teaching,” said Cervantes. “I have always intended to give back to students through education in a way that resonates with me, and working with Greenwich Junior United Way volunteers enables me to do just that. I look forward to what we can accomplish together.”
“Achieving our mission depends on talented, dedicated people who care deeply about making a difference,” said David Rabin, CEO of the Greenwich United Way. “With Alexa joining as the new program coordinator of the Greenwich Junior United Way, we’re excited to expand the reach and effectiveness of this vital program.”
GJrUW expanded this fall to include middle school students after years of proven impact from Greenwich high school students who consistently demonstrated an ability to create meaningful change in the community. The organization’s mission remains focused on building more than just a volunteer organization but rather investing in and fostering the next generation of community leaders committed to improving the lives of everyone in Greenwich. With the expansion, the organization creates immediate impact while fostering long-term community connection, engagement and leadership development from an earlier age.
