GoFundMe Established for Victim Held in Captivity for Over 20 years

A GoFundMe page titled, “Connecticut Rescue: Second Chance,” has been set up to assist the Waterbury man who was allegedly held captive in a room for 20 years, subjected to abuse, starvation and neglect.

The fundraiser was established by the non profit group, Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury.

The GoFundMe is shared on the Facebook page of Waterbury Police who said in a press release this week that in February a man was rescued after setting a fire to draw first responders to the house he was kept in and gain his freedom.

According to the GoFundMe, the individual, now 32 years old, 5’9″ tall and just 68 lbs., had been trapped in this horrific situation since he was just 11 years old. He had been deprived of basic medical and dental care, education, suffering both physically and mentally from the abuse he endured.

The organizers of the fundraiser said the individual has begun to regain his sense of hope and is facing the immense challenge of rebuilding his life after such a traumatic experience.

Funds raised will go toward providing the victim with:
• Medical and dental care
• Counseling and therapy for physical and emotional recovery
• Housing and daily living expenses as he rebuilds his independence
• Support for legal fees, ensuring he can pursue justice for the abuse he suffered

As of Friday afternoon, $26,456 has been raised from 504 donations and the goal of the fundraiser is $40,000.
