“9/11: Reclaiming Ground Zero,” a documentary film exploring the role citizens played in shaping the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site, will be shown at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 19, in the Bruce Museum Auditorium.
Following the film, Executive Producer Carolyn Lukensmeyer will lead a discussion with the audience.
After the September 11 attacks 25 years ago, when the smoke was gone and the rubble had been cleared, New Yorkers had a city to rebuild. In response to fast-tracked redevelopment plans, more than 5,000 citizens from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut gathered for the largest town hall in American history.
They came to vote on the city’s six proposals for rebuilding Ground Zero. Instead, they helped chart a new path forward. Their work influenced what is at Ground Zero today, and their previously untold story offers an example of participatory democracy in action.
The Avon Theatre and Bruce Museum are hosting the event. LWV Greenwich, CT Public and the Braver Angels Connecticut Alliance are participating as community partners and will host informational tables beginning at 1:30 p.m. and again after the film discussion.
The event is free, but advance registration through the Avon Theatre website is required:
