100 Years Old Today! Tuesday is Sal DeAngelo Day in Greenwich

In a proclamation, Mr. Camillo noted DeAngelo attended Hamilton Avenue School and the “old” Greenwich High School that is now Town Hall on Field Point Road and received a trophy from Gene Tunney at the Boys Club in the Second Annual Silver Cup Boxing Tournament Finals on February 13, 1935.

DeAngelo also played volleyball and racquetball and swam at the Greenwich YMCA and enjoyed the dances there in the Rendezvous Room and caddied at the Round Hill Club and also worked at the legendary Manero’s steakhouse where he served notables like Joe DiMaggio.

DeAngelo answered the call during World War II and was assigned to the United States Army’s 96th Signal Battalion, which included 31 other men from Greenwich, where he served in Burma, China and India.

He and his wife Anne were married at St. Mary’s Church on June 16, 1956 and raised their children Bob, Dina and Don and enjoyed five grandchildren, Annie, Julian, Ines, Bella and Scott, before Anne sadly passed away on June 8, 2021.

DeAngelo joined the Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich on July 7, 1999 and continues to be an active member of the RMA including serving on its Refreshment Committee.

DeAngelo, in keeping with RMA commitments to Fellowship, Volunteerism and Service to the community, was a Red Baron at Greenwich Hospital for 20 years and contributed a record of more than 22,000 hours of service, earning the Volunteer of the Year award in the process.
