With just under 250 students, Parkway School is the smallest elementary school in Greenwich, but anyone who is part of the community would say it has a huge heart.
And no one at Parkway has a bigger heart than the school’s beloved head custodian Rich Young.

On Tuesday, October 6, Young was honored for 40 years of service with the Greenwich Public Schools, including 30 at Parkway. Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo as well as Young’s wife and former GPS colleagues from the past four decades attended a school-wide assembly in Young’s honor.
Parkway Principal Mary Grandville noted that to her knowledge, Young was the longest standing head custodian in the district—a big bonus for Parkway.
“He has the institutional knowledge about every renovation, repair, and improvement that has been made at Parkway School,” Grandville said. “Having this historical perspective gives our school a unique advantage in being able to anticipate and plan for any future maintenance projects that may be needed.”
Young is also a core part of the close-knit Parkway faculty, hosting BBQs and holiday lunches, and donating popular auction items to the PTA Fundraiser like “Pizza with the Custodians.”
Young is not only a graduate of Greenwich High School, but a former Parkway student—and Parkway was grateful for one of its own to have spent so many years treating his former school, as Grandville said, “like it was an extension of his home.”
In recognition of his dedicated service, Camillo announced as he gave a commemorative pin to Mr.Young: “I, Fred Camillo, First Selectman of the Town of Greenwich, do hereby proclaim October 6, 2026 as Rich Young Day.”
