Steve Hall’s letter to the editor (Hall: Affordable Housing Zoning is Not an Unfunded Mandate for Greenwich) July 27, 2026) is so perfectly stated, thank you Mr. Hall.
I have also long questioned the misnomer “Town” as a descriptor for Greenwich and have even written about it in this publication. Regarding our inability to meet state minimums, I have long wondered why we didn’t start budgeting for the annual purchase of a few properties per year, to satisfy this requirement. The town would be out from under it by now.
What I most appreciate in this LTE is the identification of the management of the town as lacking morality. Here Mr. Hall hits the nail on the head as after 100 years of constant Republican rule, the moral imperative to care for our neediest citizens is throttled to 1% in our half a billion plus dollar budget!
Sadly, I just received an invitation from our Social Services department asking for a donation of $50 so they can donate a new pair of shoes to deserving children before they return to school. Last year they donated 185 pairs to local children. Guess there’s no room in our $540 million budget for $9,250 worth of shoes.
The malaise that the local government of Greenwich suffers from, whether originating in the office of the Republican First Selectman or the BET, is the lack of a moral compass.
Hopefully under a Democratic BET we can rectify this historic failing.
