On Sunday evening, Greenwich Police Dept gave an update to the road closure announcement earlier in the day to say they were investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision.
At approximately 2:09am, a Greenwich Police Officer conducting radar enforcement on Delavan Avenue observed a Lexus LS400 traveling eastbound at an estimated speed of 50 mph in a posted 25 mph zone.
The officer subsequently observed the vehicle proceed through a red traffic signal at the intersection of Delavan Avenue and Frontage Road.
Police said the officer turned to travel in the same direction as the vehicle in order to conduct a motor vehicle stop. A short time later, the officer discovered that the vehicle had crashed on West Ritch Avenue adjacent to the Byram Shore Tennis Courts. The vehicle sustained significant damage after striking a roadside utility pole.
Additional units from the Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Fire Department, and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service responded to the scene.
The driver was extricated from the vehicle and was found to be deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. A front-seat passenger was transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries.
As of Sunday night Ritch Avenue was closed between Byram Shore Road and the I-95 Northbound Exit 2 on-ramp due to utility repairs. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Greenwich Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team continues to investigate this incident. Anyone with information related to the collision is asked to contact Traffic Sergeant JD Smith at 203-622-8015 or [email protected].
Many people commented on social media that the crash was eerily similar to crash in the early morning hours that left a driver dead last October. In that crash, Eugene Banks, 60, of Stamford died after his vehicle hit a tree near the park entrance and caught fire.
