The third annual “Learn Before You Leave” College Safety Panel Set for Wednesday, April 29 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm in Greenwich Library’s Marx Family Black Box.

Event is designed for high school juniors and seniors and their families.

Members of Greenwich High School’s Rowan Center Student Advisory Board, in partnership with The Rowan Center and Greenwich Library, have organized a panel on college safety designed for current high school juniors and seniors and their families.

The third annual “Learn Before You Leave” will take place on Wednesday, April 29, 7-8pm, at the Greenwich Library’s Marx Family Black Box Theater.

Space is limited and advance registration is required here [https://greenwichlibrary.libcal.com/event/16139763].

“Learn Before You Leave” panelists will lead a candid discussion about preventing violence and staying safe on college campuses. Experts will present current data and real-world advice for both students and parents regarding college life and personal safety. The session will help facilitate open dialogue at home and among friends before students leave for college, and during their time away.

The panel will feature Ellen Brezovsky, LCSW, Director of Outreach & Community Initiatives, Kids In Crisis; Magdalena Silver, Deputy Chief of Police, UCONN; Eric Bormann, Deputy Chief of Operations, Yale University EMS; and Leonora Campbell, Director of Education and Outreach, The Rowan Center.

The program was founded by organizer Nora Stern, a junior at Greenwich High School and co-chair of The Rowan Center Student Advisory Board. Stern says, “College is fast approaching for many of my classmates. While it’s an exciting next chapter, college is a different environment presenting new situations and independence. Our goal is to share information about campus safety and resources, and hopefully encourage ongoing conversations within families and among friends. Knowledge and communication is so important when it comes to safety.”

Jennifer Barnard, Chair of the Board of The Rowan Center, says, “‘Learn Before You Leave’ has become one of The Rowan Center’s most popular teen and family events. It’s a powerful example of what real prevention looks like—giving young people and their families the tools and confidence to navigate new environments safely. This kind of education and open conversation is at the heart of our mission, and when families start these discussions early, it can truly change outcomes.” Amy Laughlin, Teen Services Librarian at Greenwich Library, says, “The Library’s Teen Services Department is always excited to support teens who have ideas about Library programs. When Nora and her fellow GHS students first approached us about hosting ‘Learn Before You Leave,’ staff were happy to educate teen library users about safety on college campuses. We are pleased to be continuing this important conversation.”

The Rowan Center counsels victims and survivors as they process their experiences of sexual violence from the past, it advocates for them as they navigate the circumstances of the present, and it educates communities to prevent sexual violence in the future.

The mission of Greenwich Library is to provide exceptional resources, programs and services that promote the joy of lifelong learning and discovery, and to offer a welcoming place for people to gather and share experiences.
