Greenwich High School Athletes Celebrate Read Across America with Hamilton Ave School’s Youngest Learners

Hamilton Avenue School celebrated Read Across America Day on Friday with a special visit from a bus full of Greenwich High School student-athletes.

Arriving wearing their Cardinal gear the GHS students spent the afternoon reading aloud to Hamilton Avenue students.

The event was designed to celebrate the power of reading while also inspiring Hamilton Avenue’s youngest learners.

According to Ham Ave School principal Diane Chiappetta-Fox, “By partnering with high school athletes, Hamilton Avenue hopes to show students that dedication, perseverance, and a love of learning can help them achieve their goals both in the classroom and beyond.”

“Our Huskies love seeing role models from the community,” she added. “When our students see Greenwich High School athletes reading to them, it sends a powerful message—that hard work in school today can lead them to become future Cardinals tomorrow.”

Eric Lane from the school’s Media center selected the books, several with dragon themes to dovetail with the school’s March Madness contest about favorite dragon books.

Several GHS students read “How to Read a Story” by Kate Messner, including Sofia Rodriguez, a GHS freshman who is on the tennis and crew teams, whose enthusiastic reading held the first grader’s attention.

“Reading brings you out of this world and is great for creativity,” Sofia told the younger readers, adding that one of her favorite books when she was younger was Pinkalicious, by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann.
