Cos Cob Man Killed in Merritt Parkway Crash Near New Canaan Rest Area

CT State Police released the name of a Cos Cob man killed in a crash on the southbound side of the Merritt Parkway near the Canaan Rest Area (exit 14) on Sunday night. State Troopers responded to a report of one car rollover collision at around 6:10pm.

Gary Berner, 87, of Dandy Drive in Cos Cob was driving a 2023 Subaru Outback when his car hit a crash attenuator and rolled over on its roof.

State police described the damage to Dept of Transportation property as “Damage to impact attenuator in the gore of the Route 15 South, New Canaan Rest Area.”

Berner was extricated from the vehicle, where CPR was
administered. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the collision scene. The New Canaan Fire Dept and Police Dept responded to the scene to assist with medical aid. The State of CT Department of Transportation responded to the scene to assist with traffic control. C.A.R.S personnel responded to the scene and assisted with photography and Forensic Mapping.
